Phloridzin is used to induce experimental glycosuria by blocking the reabsorption of glucose from kidney tubules. It has also been demonstrated to be an inhibitor of protein kinase C thus activating tyrosinase activity and melanogenesis in B16 mouse melanoma cell lines. Phenolic compounds and their glycosides are widespread in plants. They are regarded as metabolic by-products conferring resistance to pathogens.
