MMP 3 (Stromelysin 1) is secreted as a latent proenzyme. Upon activation by plasmin, cathepsin G or neutrophil elastase active MMP 3 of Mr 45 kDa is formed. The enzyme hydrolyses proteoglycans, laminin, fibronectin, gelatin and collagen types III, IV and IX. Furthermore it activates pro-MMP-9 and pro MMP-8 (Kolkenbrock et al., 1993; Ogata et al., 1992). The 45 kDa enzyme is easily converted to a highly active 28 kDa species by hydrolysis of the C-terminal domain. The recombinant 22 kDa catalytic domain displays the same activity as the 28 kDa form
